Making pictures out of coloured glass shapes is painstaking, contemplative and absorbing. To an oil painter the limited range of colours poses a challenge which I try to solve with the use of rhythm, direction and the size and shape of the glass pieces. I always struggle with the choice of whether or not to grout the pictures, to keep the sharp edges and vibrancy of the cut tiles or to cement them into a solidity and permanence in the time honoured way.
